Every household should be able to shut off their own utilities (gas, water, electricity) in an emergency. This requires knowing where the shutoffs are and having the tools to operate them.
A gas shutoff requires a specific wrench. A water main shutoff may require a key. The tools for these are inexpensive and should live near the relevant shutoff valves.
