Boiling kills everything but requires fuel and time. Filters remove bacteria and protozoa but not all viruses. Tablets work on most pathogens but taste bad. UV kills pathogens but requires clear water and power.

The practical answer for most households: a squeeze filter as your primary method, purification tablets as backup, and boiling as a fail-safe when you have fuel.
