Travel Emergencies: Preparing Before You Leave

Most travel problems are manageable with a little advance preparation. Here's what to think through before any trip.

Safety NoteFor travel safety guidance, the US Department of State (travel.state.gov) provides country-specific information for international travel. Register your travel at STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) before international trips. For domestic travel, know the emergency management contacts for your destination state or region.

Before: Prepare Now

  • Share your itinerary with someone at home
  • Know your travel insurance coverage
  • Research your destination's emergency services (local 911 equivalent)
  • Carry a small get-home bag or everyday carry kit
  • Keep medications in carry-on luggage, never in checked bags
  • Have a physical copy of all important information — don't rely only on your phone
  • Have emergency cash in local currency if traveling internationally

During: What to Do

  • Stay calm and assess the situation
  • Contact your out-of-area contact to let them know you're okay
  • Find out if travel services (flight, train) are affected and what your options are
  • Follow instructions from local emergency services and law enforcement
  • If stranded: find shelter, notify someone of your location, conserve phone battery

After: Recovery

  • Contact travel insurance provider if applicable
  • Document any losses or damages
  • Contact your embassy or consulate if abroad and in need of assistance
  • Notify home contacts of your status as soon as possible
