Evacuation: Before, During, and After
The households that evacuate safely are the ones who made decisions before the emergency arrived. Here's how to make yours.

Before: Prepare Now
- Know your evacuation zone designation
- Have two evacuation routes planned and driven in advance
- Know your destination options (family, friends, hotels, shelters on your route)
- Pack go-bags and keep them accessible year-round
- Keep vehicle fuel at least half-full during risk periods
- Have out-of-area contact everyone knows to call
- Confirm pet plan — know which shelters and hotels accept pets
During: What to Do
- Leave early — don't wait to be mandatory-ordered if you feel at risk
- Grab go-bags — do not spend time collecting additional items
- Get pets in carriers or on leash before you open exterior doors
- Turn off gas if instructed by authorities
- Lock up and leave quickly
- Contact out-of-area contact as you leave — tell them your destination
- Follow official evacuation routes; do not attempt shortcuts during major events
- Keep your radio on for route updates
After: Recovery
- Contact out-of-area contact to confirm your location
- Document any home damage with photos before returning
- Follow official re-entry guidance — do not return until cleared
- Check home for structural, utility, and hazardous material issues before sleeping inside
- Begin insurance process if applicable
